Young pigs in the week after 3 week weaning have a tremendous capacity for growth. Poor nutrition is often the primary reason that they don't grow to their maximum potential. Other factors include management, environment and disease.
In simple terms, the young weaned pig just doesn't eat enough. Why doesn't it eat enough? Because it's immature digestive system can't cope with the typical post-weaning food that is currently available.
For this reason, Wesfeeds have designed the SEW Piglet Pre Starter Crumbles to specifically meet the needs of early weaned piglets.
SEW Piglet Pre Starter Crumbles
SEW Piglet Pre Starter Crumbles include a high level of milk powder and whey powder which makes this ration very digestible. A feed flavouring is also included which enhances palatability and ensures high levels of food intake by young pigs. All the essential amino acids, minerals and vitamins are included.
The high palatability and digestibility of the SEW Piglet Pre Starter Crumble allows the small pig to consume 230 g/day or more in the first week, compared to well under 200 g/day on a traditional diet.
The SEW Piglet Pre Starter Crumble is a very cost effective ration. Each pig would only consume about 2 kg, therefore cost per pig on this diet is very low. Computer models based on actual research show that extra weight gain in early life results in substantial reductions in days to slaughter. This also means big savings in feed costs when they are consuming 3 kg per day.
How to feed for best performance
The SEW Piglet Pre Starter Crumbles should be introduced as early as 7 days of age whilst the piglets are still suckling. It should be offered at regular intervals during the day in very small amounts. This feed is highly digestible and is suitable for those that need or want to wean as early as 14 days of age. It is specifically designed to be fed to piglets from 7 days of age to 28 days of age. It is very important to ensure that good quality cool water is always available.
Piglet Starter Crumbles
The Piglet Starter Crumble is designed to be fed to piglets when they come off the SEW Piglet Pre Starter Crumbles at 28 days of age. Feed intake and performance are still critical at this early stage in a piglets life, and Wesfeeds recommend the Piglet Starter Crumbles which are designed to meet the piglets requirements.
How to feed for best performance
Piglet Starter Crumbles can be fed from 21 days of age and it is strongly recommended that it be fed up to 35-42 days of age. Once again this feed should be kept as fresh as possible, and if feeding in self feeders, allocate only as much as can be consumed in a 24 hour period. Ensure good quality cool water is always available.
Feed design and ingredients
To meet the requirements of the early weaned pig, the SEW Piglet Pre Starter Crumble and the Piglet Starter Crumble have been formulated using only the most readily digestible ingredients. These ingredients include wheat, groats, bread crumbs, full fat soya, soya meal, fish meal, milk powder, whey powder, vegetable oil, sugar, minerals and vitamins. To enhance feed intake and improve digestibility, other additives include feed flavouring, acidifier and enzymes.
Pig Weaner Pellets
The Pig Weaner Pellet should be fed to weaners after they come off the Piglet Starter Crumbles at 5-6 weeks of age. The young pig has tremendous potential for efficient growth at this age. To ensure that it's full genetic potential is achieved, it is important that a highly digestible feed is fed.
How to feed for best performance
Feed from 5-6 weeks of age to 8-9 weeks of age. Feed to appetite using self feeders. Ensure that good quality cool water is always available.
